Manila (AFP) - A major 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck near one of the Philippines key tourist hubs on Tuesday, the United States Geological Survey reported.

The quake struck at 08:12 local time (0012 GMT) some five kilometres (three miles) east of Balilihan, in the Bohol region of the archipelago, at a depth of 56 kilometres, the agency said.

The town lies across the Cebu Strait from the popular tourist destination of Cebu City, the country's fifth most populous city, about 60 kilometres (37 miles) away.

USGS issued a yellow warning, after the quake saying "some casualties and damage are possible and the impact should be relatively localised. Past yellow alerts have required a local or regional level response."

The temblor was followed by two aftershocks, each measuring more than 5.0 in magnitude.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue a Pacific-wide tsunami threat and there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The epicentre was 629 kilometres from the capital Manila.

Balilihan has a population of around 18,500, according to the town's official website.
The Philippines lies on the so-called Pacific ring of fire, a chain of islands that are prone to quakes and volcanic eruptions.

It’s Now or Never! 

The strong discussions on food security, poverty, climate change and all related issues have become the hot topic today after the hit of an earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Right and left symposiums and seminars were being held by people concerned on the knowhow of disasters, the effect of calamities, its preparations to overcome the event, its implications, the things on what to do and the like.

Recently, the Vice President of the Philippines Jejomar Binay was invited as guest of honor and speaker in Negros Oriental State University’s (NORSU) Symposium on “Poverty Alleviation and Climate Change” last March 16, 2011. With him is Senator Miguel Zubiri.

Among the line up of speakers during the said forum are Silliman President Dr. Ben Malayang III, former Negros Oriental Third District Rep. Herminio Teves, Dr. Gil Villancio of the University of the Philippines in Los Banos, Laguna, Department of Agriculture Undersecretary Joel Rudinas, Dr. Juan Serana of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Metals Industry Research Development Director Engr. Francisco Dime.

All of them have had their own talk related to the topic concerned. The topics discussed during the said convention are current issues on food security, poverty and climate change.

All other issues talked about include “Best Agricultural Practices for the Rural Areas”, “Converting Alienable and Disposable Lands to Agricultural Lands”, “Bio-Diesel Program, from Jatropha Cureas and Its Processing”, “Studies on Mechanical Equipment for Agriculture Using Bio-fuel”, “Food Productivity Using Public Lands”, and “Addressing Poverty, Climate Change, and Food Security in the Province and Country”.

It seems that such topics and concerns are addressed properly with their well-researched discussions, but the question remains they will be able to apply it effectively or will they ever do what they were saying?

It’s nice and wonderful to listen to impressive discussions especially concerning on the topics food security, poverty, climate change and the like. However, the problem most of the time is that these were tend to be talked only and not applied in action. Though there were others which came into reality but most of them remain to be just blown on air during a speaking ceremony and were consumed by listening from the left ear and leaving it outside the right ear.

What seems to be the problem then? Some said the budget of it. Others suggest that it’s about spending the savings. Well, money always seems to be the problem even before. Little step on the venture can make distances reach little by little until by the time the finish line is achieved.

Is it a sign that it's the BEGINNING of the END of the world?

Perhaps many will agree that they don't want the world to end yet but what will you do if that is destined to come about? Well, we can't do anything but pray. Every little prayer can be a big help. Problem is, we always ask help and everything from Him but seldom we give thanks. Though He will grant almost everything that we requests and asks for, we should still ask forgiveness and be grateful to everything we have in this vulnerable world.

It sounds too religious and absurd but the fact remains that we live in this planet not just to enjoy life but to spread love and respect to each and everyone. It can be too awkward to exercise such ideals but we should be responsible enough. We can do something and that simple act will lead us to betterment of our lives.

Everything happens for a reason, like what they always say. True! So, should you do bad, it will get back to you the same way like a boomerang. But if you will act the other way around, you will surely experience stuffs appropriately.

The idea that the world will end soon will never do come true if we do good things in our environment, to the people around us, and eventually change our ill and wicked attitudes and undertakings. We should not wait that human race, the living creatures and the environment will go extinct.

Let's try to make a move and bring back what was taken. And I supposed you already know what I was up to here --- end the suffering of the world!
