The Exorcism of Emily Rose is a 2005 blend of psychological thriller and courtroom drama, Emily Rose is a 19-year-old college student who begins displaying bizarre and troubling behavior; as her actions become increasingly destructive and shocking, Emily begins speaking in strange tongues and destroys religious symbols that surround her.
Emily's parents believe that their daughter has become possessed of the devil, and the Catholic Church agrees to authorize an exorcism of the young woman. As Father Moore, Emily’s parish priest, attempts to drive the demons from Emily's body, the girl dies in the midst of the taxing ceremonies, and Father Moore finds himself charged with negligent homicide.
Attorney Erin Brunner is hired to represent Father Moore against prosecutor Ethan Thomas, who intends to prove there were concrete medical explanations for Emily's behaviors, including epilepsy and schizophrenia, all leading to a heated courtroom debate between the notions of faith and science.
The movie
was inspired by the real-life story of
Anneliese Michel, a young woman from Germany who died in 1976 after priests in Wurzburg spent eight months attempting to exorcise demons from her body.
The movie, although mostly trial-based, shows flashbacks of the events leading up to Emily Rose’s exorcism, and ultimately, her death.
The six demons:
1. I am the one who dwells within
Cain!
2. I am one who dwelt within
Nero!
3. I dwelt within
Judas!
4. I was with
Legion.
5. I am
Belial.
6. And I am
Lucifer, the devil in the flesh.
The plot
Alone in her dorm room one night, at 3:00 AM, Emily catches on to a strange burning smell coming from the hallway. When she checks on it, she sees the door open and shut by itself several times. When she goes back to her room, she sees a jar of pencils and pens move by itself.
Additionally, her covers roll themselves down and a great weight seems to press down on her, a force which also proceeds to choke her and seemingly to possess her momentarily. Through the episodes she wonders if they are really happening or if they are just hallucinations.
She suffers more visions, is hospitalized, and diagnosed with epilepsy. She is given anti-seizure medications, which she claims do not work. Her visions continue, as do her severe bodily contortions.
Later in the film Father Moore explains that 3:00 AM is the "witching hour", which evil spirits use to mock the Holy Trinity
. Significantly, it is the opposite of 3:00 PM, traditionally taken to be the hour at which Jesus died.
My experience
It was early in the morning, I was awaken by my runny nose. I got up from bed and looked for a handkerchief to wipe it out. After awhile, I went to the comfort room to pee. I thought it was late at night but when I checked the time on my phone, it was exactly 3:00 AM - the witching hour.
I went back to bed and remembered the movie I watched just about few hours ago - The Exorcism of Emily Rose. The wind was strong that time. The curtains was waving on and off. I started to breathe deeply. And asked my self, are there strange smells and sounds?
Nine minutes passed, I was still awake on bed. Praying and asked God for forgiveness. Some minutes more, I slept soundly. Nothing happened. It was just an ill-feeling that came in. After all, if you have strong faith in Him, nothing will really happen bad to you.
Just pray and let Him do the rest. Come the next day, I have big smile drawn on my face. (",)
